We present results from the analysis of deep ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the spiral galaxy M81. The inferred total (0.5–2 keV band) luminosity of M81 is ∼ 3×10 ergs s, excluding the contribution from identified interlopers found within the D25 ellipse. The nucleus of the galaxy alone accounts for about 65% of this luminosity. The rest is due to 26 other X-ray sources (contributing ∼ 10%)...
متن کاملThe Relative Effects of X-Rays, Gamma Rays and Beta Rays on Chromosomal Breakage in Tradescantia.
OR some time it has been generally considered that the production of F chromosomal aberrations in Tradescantia and many other materials is essentially independent of the wave length of the exciting radiation in the region shorter than 1.5 A. This view has not been seriously questioned in recent years and to date has remained one of the fundamental tenets of radiobiology. A number of isolated in...
متن کاملTriboluminescence and X-Rays
Triboluminescence is shown to produce X-rays from the nanoparticles (NPs) that form as the sticky acrylic adhesive of Scotch tape is peeled from the polyethylene (PE) roll in a vacuum. Prior to peeling, atoms in the adhesive are not under electromagnetic (EM) confinement and have full thermal kT energy. But upon peeling, the atoms in NPs that form in the gap between adhesive and PE are under EM...
متن کاملISM : Discriminating between Cosmic Rays and X - rays
The ISM of active galaxy centers is exposed to a combination of cosmic ray, FUV and X-ray radiation. We apply PDR models to this ISM with both 'nor-mal' and highly elevated (5 × 10 −15 s −1) cosmic-ray rates and compare the results to those obtained for XDRs. Our existing PDR-XDR code is used to construct models over a 10 3 − 10 5 cm −3 density range and for 0.16-160 erg s −1 cm −2 im-pingent f...
متن کاملConnecting Visible Wavelength Standards With X Rays and Rays
The 1996 centenary of W. K. Röntgen’s discovery of x rays celebrated the penetrating visions offered by these “strange rays.” Aside from their ubiquitous application to imaging the interior structure of visually opaque systems, x rays continue to have important applications in elucidating the geometrical and electronic structure of matter. In addition to the synchrotron radiation facilities, co...
